[Of course, he's not exactly sure what Red means by 'types' but maybe that's close enough? And really, this dragon-like creature wasn't even a dragon type? Well that made no sense...
Now Red's rummaging in his bag for something though, so Lucas watches curiously, even moreso as the other boy takes out a red contraption of some sort. Cautiously, Lucas takes it. He still didn't know much about technology and didn't want to break it if it was that important to Red, but the explanation on how to use it seems simple enough. Even though... the poor kid might be looking rather horrified at the plant-dino-toad present on the screen.
...scrolling down, he doesn't look much better. These were Pokemon? A lot of them looked awfully like Chimeras of some sort. That Blastoise... it looked kinda like those turtles that launched missiles, right? And there was a man-eating plant... a horse on fire... even some kind of dinosaur! And there were others he recognised too - Jolteon and Gengar for example.
...and another, which causes Lucas to pause. He turns the screen towards Red, indicating a purple-ish cat-like creature.]
Mewtwo... I met this one! [A sadness comes over him.] I met him when we were attacked by Elios... He wanted to hurt people and I tried to stop him but... he doesn't trust humans. He won't listen.
That kind of expression, huh... Red isn't sure if it was a good idea to share it or not, but - that was his world and his pokémon (for the most part), so he doesn't let it get to him. He had nothing to be ashamed of.
But then the expression changes further, and-
Mewtwo. ]
...I heard about him, from another trainer. He told me that he's dangerous. [ A pause, then- ] Did he say anything to you?
Mewtwo? Just that... he seems to think humans are using Pokemon as slaves. And the ones who want to be with humans, they're just weak. He can't seem to understand that it's possible to be friends with them - that they want to help their trainers.
[Although, having said that, Lucas doesn't know much about the battling side of things. If he did, he'd likely start to see where Mewtwo was coming from.]
I've met a boy named Trip and his Pokemon seemed happy enough. Yours do too!
[ Trip? He's sure he's heard that name but can't put a face on it, but he doesn't think long enough to try. ]
It's the way pokémon and people should be. We should make each other happy. [ He speaks the words fondly; then, with a pause, he decides to lower down, elbows resting on his legs as his hands knit together. Thinking of pokémon with trainers as slaves... ]
I don't know much about Mewtwo, but there's one where I come from too. [ That should be fine to share. ] It was born inside a laboratory after scientists found a rare pokémon called Mew. There were books about it inside -- but most of the building was destroyed after an accident when a pokémon got out -- Mewtwo.
[ It's already there in the air without him needing to say the same. There's more to this than a mini history lesson though, a thought he's had since coming here too. ]
...When you're someone looking into a world, it must be weird. Trainers keeping pokémon in balls; do you think it's weird? [ His gaze flickers Lucas's way, but he doesn't wait for an answer. ] Someone told me that they tolerate our pokémon because we have them under control. In other worlds, people kill creatures they consider dangerous.
[ Charizard's watching him, the air around him getting tense, and Red strokes a hand against his leg. Maybe it's not worth getting that into it. ]
People hurt him, so all he knows is that and a world inside a laboratory... he is strong too. If he's anything like the one I know, he's one of the strongest pokémon.
[ Let's just pause, give Lucas a moment to process that all. ]
[That part in particular seems to catch Lucas' attention. So he was some kind of experiment? Something grown from this... Mew?]
It's true... I didn't really understand the idea of Pokemon being kept in those balls either. And... well, seeing creatures like your Charizard, I would have felt threatened by him if you weren't around. I would have... tried to defend myself if I had to.
[He doesn't want to say that he'd try and kill the Pokemon, particularly with the sudden heavy atmosphere and with Charizard standing right there, but he hopes Red would get the idea.]
I... I didn't know where Mewtwo had been born but... there are creatures kind of like that in my world. They started off as ordinary animals but...
[He pauses. It was still uncomfortable to talk about, as shown by the strange squeezing sensation that would radiate off him.]
There are people who think they would be more 'cool' if turned into monsters. Stitched together or attached to machines. Sometimes I had to destroy them... but I know it wasn't their fault.
[Lucas looks up to Red.]
Your Mewtwo... did you teach it that it could be friends with humans?
[ Lucas doesn't say the word, but he still doesn't like the clear implication, even though there's a part of him that understands if he had to could mean self-defence. But he keeps that to himself, and soon it's out of the forefront of his mind by the time he describes the...experimentations of his own world.
His eyes widen, a sick look of disgust on his face. The hell...?
But he can't say anything about, not with the question that catches him off-guard more ways than one. He keeps silent, sight lowering briefly. ]
W-well... It's going to be hard to teach someone like that friendship. [ A smile, if small. ] But I want to believe anyone can open their heart to others one day, and we can get things right.
[ His face takes a sour note to it again, however. ] But stitching creatures together... that's disgusting. People who would do that - they're the real danger in the world, who just do with others what they want.
[Of course, these people had affected him personally too, but now wasn't the time for that. That Red understands the atrocity of the deed is enough (but wow you'd have to be sick if you thought it was okay too).]
Once I get back, things will get better. I'll... make sure of that.
[Though perhaps he doesn't sound totally confident in that regard.]
As for Mewtwo? I don't know if he'll ever be able to understand but... I hope he can. I want him to realise that it doesn't matter how he was born... he's alive. That's a good thing. I want him to know what it means to be happy.
I believe anyone can change. It's not gonna be easy, and being here... [ ...well. He can't stop himself from remembering his conversation with Silver, and the added threat that put onto the pokémon, and he didn't have much faith in the police force here...
Time to smile brighter. ] The trainers here don't want to see anyone get hurt. We'll do what we can--
[ A noise erupts from the waters suddenly, drowning out Red with the appearance of (1) one Lapras. Hope you didn't forget about her there, her voice whale-like with the following sound she makes. Her head turns to face them, and
oh. there's company. Let her just coo a greeting their way. ]
[Who could ignore an entrance like that? As the sudden crash of water and the eerie whale-like call echo across to the group from the sea, Lucas and Boney turn to the creature in question who made the noise. Blue, big shell...]
Wow! That must be Lapras! Right?
[All right, seeing such a pretty and seemingly gentle-natured animal out in the sea did bring a smile to the kid's face despite their prior conversation. He chances a glance at Red before looking back to Lapras... and heading closer.]
[ Her response is like a hum, long and elegant, as his approach meets her own closer to the shores where the tips of her flippers could be seen. Her eyes are upon him, looking at him non-intrusively, before she converses in the way others in his own world do so. And you are?
On the outside, there's a questioning note in a similar hum-like tone, which might itself pose the same question easily to others less psychic. ]
[Under the gaze of the majestic creature, subdued by the tone of her voice, the boy finds himself feeling somewhat humbled.
It's then that Lucas gives a bark though: Don't forget about me! Lucas glances to his dog, noting the wagging tail, and offers a small smile.]
And this is Boney. Red told us about you. It's nice to meet you, Lapras!
[Gosh he'd love a ride on her but it feels rude to just come out and ask... although given the nature of this place, Red may be able to pick up on those thoughts if he's tuned in enough.]
[ She tips her head to the both of them, both Lucas and Boney, and a pleasure to meet you too given their way, her outside voice as soft as cooing.
...There is an intense conversation going on over there, and Red is only getting half of it. It looks like introductions though, if they're talking like really conversing... it's pleasant. A much nicer reaction than with the others.
But that was Lapras. Calming to the soul. ]
Lapras is really smart. If you wanna ask her anything, [ not that he needed to read any minds to get that ] just make it a yes or no question, and she'll tell you!
[Maybe something about the sea was comforting to Lucas, and seeing something seemingly so gentle swimming in it was a welcome relief too. Sure, his home oceans weren't exactly the safest... but it had always been there. It was familiar.
At Red's comment, Lucas looks back. He's not sure if Red would really believe him if he said so, but he'd told others before and they seemed fine with it...]
Actually... I can understand her just fine. She seems to understand me too. Back in my world, I could understand the thoughts of animals. I guess... Pokemon aren't really all that different. Since she's smart, it makes it easier.
[He smiles fondly, thinking about his old cows, the pigs, the chickens that were mostly concerned with avoiding being chased. Simple lines of thought but he kind of missed it.]
R...really? [ That surprised him- he knew Lapras could easily understand people and their intentions, but to that point--
or it was because of this boy's apparent gift. Something that makes him want to test it--but he can't think of something, not when mind-reading is such a widespread talent in Empatheias. ]
What's she saying? Is she saying anything now?
[ yes those are good questions. The next noise the water pokémon makes is like a murmuring chuckle, head tipping. Ah, her funny trainer.
Tell him that Gengar has taken his hat, and that I used to be with the scientists at the Silph Co building. That should make him happy.
And you and Boney may ride on my back, if you wish. The waters are calming today.
[He was used to being asked, really. Especially when humans had a bond with their non-human companions - who wouldn't want to know exactly what they were saying?
Still, Lucas feels a bit put on the spot all of a sudden, wondering where to begin to explain about what Lapras is saying to him. Luckily, the Pokemon pipes up with a solution of her own, her pleasant laughter cheering the kid up a little.]
She said... Gengar's taken your hat. And that she used to be with the scientists at Silph Co?
Ah, and thank you, Lapras! That would be fun! Right, Boney?
[He looks down to his doggy pal, who doesn't seem too sure about the whole 'riding on thing in water being fun' part, but he'll deal. Although it's then that Lucas realises just what he'd said earlier... Wait, what, Gengar had suddenly taken Red's hat??]
[ What does Red react to first. The first part is near instant, hands already touching the sound to turn to look around but not making it when Lucas says the rest. Eyes already wide, conflict in his mind and posture--
no, what the heck was that about Gengar having his hat. There she is. ]
Gengar, we see you! Don't lose it!
[ Did you say chuck the hat and spin it around in the air? That's what Gengar heard! Jolteon starts barking, and then he pounces off to chase after her, continuing his yaps the entire time. Catch her if you can, shorty!!!
That results in the huff, more like a snigger, from Charizard, who picks up a piece of food to eat. Yes, nothing new going on here. Lapras takes the time to come closer in, shifting her position to open her shell more up for them to climb. There's spacious room, and the shell not as uncomfortable as it may look with the protruding parts allowing for somewhere to grip onto. You should be able to find a nice spot to lay down on too, Boney. ]
[Silly as the situation was, Lucas can't help but laugh a little at Gengar and her silly tricks, especially seeing Jolteon running after her and barking, as if telling her off. The poor kid hadn't laughed much lately. It was a welcome change.
And at Lapras' invitation, how can he say no? She was evidently waiting for them, so he waves for his dog to follow before approaching the water Pokemon and climbing onto that big shell, using the jutting parts as hand-holds. Boney hesitates... but hey there is a lot of space, so it should be okay, right? Finally, he hops up behind Lucas, nestling between more of the protruding nodules.
Now on Lapras' back, Lucas waves down to Red.]
Red! Do you want to come too?
[They wouldn't go too far after all, right? So he should be able to keep an eye on his other Pokemon, hopefully.]
Huh-? [ wait when did you two get up there. Lapras vibrates her voice to a sing song sound, gesturing with her head for the boy to join and-- sure, sure, he's standing up. ]
Charizard, you wanna go for a fly? [ A finger pointed up, and the answer comes in the form of what sounds like a groan, lifting himself onto his own two feet with wings spreading out. Can't take off from right here, so you all go on ahead. Which Red will, turning to the trio with a grin on, and don't mind the ease he climbs up onto Lapras, twisting his body to face back out to the beach they'll now slowly begin to move from, Lapras's flippers once again push them onto the water.
And despite the slight angle to get them into the water, the waters themselves are calm, and thus so is their ride. There's the sensation below, like a soft hum that would be the rhythm of vibrations spreading up Lapras's body, but the shell absorbs that to a barely noticeable state.
Unlike the shadow of Charizard passing them, circling them once above like a seagull before going up higher. Whatever, the city people can deal with a dragon around. They've got enough weirdos around!! ]
You always invite people out for rides behind my back, huh Lapras? [ It's joking, and he receives the same sing song voice before in return, and Red laughs at that. ]
[Lucas tenses as Lapras slides into the water, his hold on her shell firm since he's not used to how she moves. Boney too seems unsettled at first, but once they're in the calm water, they both relax.
...at least until a dark shadow suddenly soars over them, causing the kid to look up at the sight of the orange firey dragon-like Pokemon circling above. He looked so different gliding on the air currents than when he had sat towering and fierce-looking on the beach below.
Still, once he gets used to everything, Lucas finds himself more comfortable and opts to lie back on Lapras' shell. The water's so calm that her movement is smooth. He feels safe here.]
This is nice... I'm glad I came here, instead of the tournament.
[ Right, the tournament. Now so far away, but--he wasn't thinking about that. Didn't want to think about that. ]
Forget about the tournament! [ Neither should Lucas. Red tips his head, eyes closing to take in breeze against his face before he's smiling back at the other boy. ] Let's think about the things we like! Long roads, new places... new faces! Being with friends.
Think up something that makes you happy, then share it with me!
[No point dwelling on what's happening over there. Why not just take a moment to reflect on the things that made them truly happy?]
The flowers, the trees, the animals... walking through the woods with... with my family. Mom's cooking. Playing with Claus and the Dragos...
[Bittersweet memories but he tries to hold onto the positive side of it. Huh, were those yellow petals suddenly falling from the sky? But there weren't any trees around here. Evidently, those emotions were causing a reaction.]
[ He's seen it before--black feathers appearing with no birds in sight, or without the birds doing anything more than swiping them when they appeared. Some brush against the pokémon, Lapras's nose getting tickled before she opens her mouth and chomps on a few, Red raising a hand to touch one as it falls, the joy in them evident. ]
Great! And Boney's there too, right? [ A little suddenly said perhaps, but he's grinning back to Lucas, still even when his eyes close, bringing his memories from his mind and heart-- ]
Being with the people you love and care for, walking through forests after the rain... and smelling freshly baked pies and cakes!
[ A chuckle hits behind his mouth, and there's a sweet smell like strawberries, a warmth like just cooled Victorian Sponge. But a hand hand then goes to his chest, curling into a fist with the memory of the tower, of the mother and its children-- he clings tight, not letting any negativity come through. ]
And remembering never to give up when times get dark...No matter how tough it seems.
[ The amulet on his wrist colours with a golden glow briefly there, before fading away. ]
